How to Make Your Hotel Stay More Sustainable

Are you looking to be more environmentally conscious when you travel? Here are our top tips to make your next hotel stay a more sustainable one.

Turn Out the Lights and Set the Thermostat

Heating, cooling, and lighting are usually a building’s biggest energy sources. If you’re leaving your room, make sure you switch off the lights and make sure the air conditioning isn’t cranking at a high level when the room isn’t occupied.

Keep Room Water Usage Low

Keep your showers short and make sure you don’t leave the water running while you’re shaving or brushing your teeth. If these are things you wouldn’t do at home, make sure you don’t do that on the road as well. A little bit of less water usage can go a long way to help the environment.

Bring a Reusable Water Bottle

Many airports and hotels now have water bottle refilling stations making it easy to avoid the use of plastic water bottles. Not sure where to find a free water station? Head to the hotel’s gym as many hotel gyms big or small often have water stations.

Walk, Bike, or Use Public Transportation

Instead of using rideshare apps or taxis, consider using public transportation like trains, buses, or bike rentals. Use the Google maps app on your phone to show you the best public transit routes available from your hotel.

Skip Travel Size Toiletries

Single use travel size toiletry bottles for shampoo and soap are a big source of plastic pollution. Big hotel chains have begun to phase out single use toiletries in favor of refillable bottles. Consider picking up some small refillable bottles from Amazon or Target to fill them with your favorite soap brands for when you’re on the road.
