Real ID Deadline Less than a Year Away

In late 2022, the Department of Homeland Security once again extended the Real ID deadline by another two years until May 7, 2025. This leaves travelers now less than a year to make sure their ID is Real ID compliant. Travelers will need to have a Real ID to travel aboard domestic flights, enter federal facilities such as military bases, federal courthouses and other secured facilities starting May 7, 2025. Despite several previous extensions, it is believed there will be no additional extensions after May 7, 2025. However, the TSA recently requested to not have full REAL ID enforcement until 2027.

Those in need of a new Real ID can obtain one at their state’s local DMV or similar office. Each state’s policies will differ but at a minimum will need to produce your full legal name, date of birth, social security number, two proofs of address of principal residence and lawful status. Travelers can still use their passport on domestic flights in lieu of a Real ID.
