If you’ve traveled within the past few years, you’ve probably seen signs around the airport for TSA Precheck, and the shorter security lines that accompany TSA Precheck status. Now there’s a lot more to love about the program, including free access for children under 12 with accompanying guardians, and the ability to leave on shoes and belts when going through security. There are now 65 airlines across more than 200 airports participating in the TSA Precheck program, making it a worthy investment for any traveler.
The process for applying to TSA Precheck is quick and easy. Go to TSA Precheck and fill out the application and schedule a five minute interview at an enrollment center near you. You can apply for other Trusted Traveler programs on the DHS website, including Global Entry, which includes expedited processing across land borders in addition to the usual TSA Precheck benefits.
TSA Precheck costs only $85.00 for five years of enrollment, and there are opportunities to have this fee waived. Active duty military are eligible for TSA Precheck for free, simply by entering their DoD ID in the “known traveler number” field of airline reservations. Civilian Department of Defense employees are also eligible for TSA Precheck for free, simply by opting in via milConnect, and by entering their DoD ID in the “known traveler number” field of airline reservations. In addition, there are many credit card programs that offer incentives to cover some or all of the TSA Precheck fee.
